Gaston is an operating 177.6 MW conventional hydroelectric plant in Thelma, North Carolina, on the Roanoke River in Halifax County. It consists of four 44.4 MW generating units that entered service in February and March 1963. The facility operates within PJM and is part of the Roanoke Rapids and Gaston Hydroelectric Project licensed under FERC Project No. P-2009. Gaston serves approximately 55,000 homes and generates an average of approximately 225,600 MWh annually. The station features a 3,600-foot concrete and earth dam, 105 feet high, with a 34-mile reservoir (Lake Gaston) covering 20,300 acres at normal pool elevation of 200 feet mean sea level.
