Northern Indiana Public Service Company LLC (NIPSCO) - LaPorte County - MISO

Michigan City Generating Station is a single-unit, 540 MW coal-fired power plant on the Lake Michigan lakefront in Michigan City, La Porte County, Indiana. NiSource owns the plant and its regulated utility subsidiary NIPSCO operates it; NIPSCO built the station in 1931 and placed the current generator, Unit 12, in service in 1974. NIPSCO first announced in 2018 that it would exit coal, and in 2021 refined the Michigan City retirement timing to a window between 2026 and 2028. La Porte County officials and the United Steelworkers pushed NIPSCO in 2025 to study converting the site to natural gas or battery storage instead of closing it, but in late December 2025, even as federal emergency orders kept two other Indiana coal plants running, NIPSCO confirmed Michigan City "remains scheduled for retirement at the end of 2028." The plant sells into MISO and settles at the NIPS.MICHCP12 node, located essentially at the plant site. NIPSCO has also been remediating coal ash ponds on the 123-acre property ahead of the planned shutdown.
