W A Parish is a coal-fired power facility with 4,008.4 MW of EIA-reported nameplate capacity in Fort Bend County, Texas, registered as EIA Plant ID 3470. NRG Texas Power LLC owns and operates the plant, a subsidiary of NRG Energy, Inc. At commissioning, DOE identified Petra Nova at W. A. Parish as the world's largest post-combustion carbon-capture system. The project was designed to capture at least 90% of CO2 from a 240-MW-equivalent slipstream of Unit 8 flue gas and capture approximately 5,200 short tons of CO2 per day at full capacity. Commercial operation began in 1982.

## Data quality

- The 4,008.4-MW figure is the whole-site nameplate capacity; separate coal-only capacity figures describe only part of the station. Petra Nova has two closely related operating milestones: the project report gives a commercial-operation date of December 29, 2016, while DOE records completion and commencement of commercial operations on January 10, 2017. DOE sources describe up to $190 million in total cost share and $167 million in financial assistance, while the later project report lists a $195 million DOE grant; these figures reflect different project-funding stages and should not be treated as sale consideration. No permanent generating-unit retirement is identified in the current plant record, which lists nine operational units and no planned units; Unit 8's 2022 outage followed a fire and was not described as retirement.
