NYISO county DER hosting capacity, split by ESS charge and discharge

A new NYISO map layer shows NYSERDA's county-level DER hosting capacity, toggleable between total capacity, ESS charging headroom, and ESS discharging headroom.

Open the NYISO map and turn on DER hosting capacity under Infrastructure to see NYSERDA's Integrated Energy Data Resource (IEDR) rollup for all 62 New York counties: DER counts by status, feeder counts, and hosting-capacity headroom.

The layer's default view colors counties by total hosting capacity, but the real value is the ESS charge/discharge split. A co-located battery can only charge into a wire's spare import capacity, but it can discharge more than the wire's rating when it's serving co-located load — so a county with plenty of total headroom can still be tight on one side or the other. Switch between Total, ESS charge, and ESS discharge from the layer's detail panel to see where that asymmetry shows up.

This is the only statewide source covering National Grid and PSEG Long Island hosting capacity — neither utility publishes its own hosting-capacity layer — and it refreshes daily from NYSERDA's public API.
