Sheldon
Sheldon Station is a two-unit, coal-fired steam plant one mile north of Hallam in Lancaster County, Nebraska, owned and operated by Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD). Unit 1 entered service in 1961 and Unit 2 in 1965; together they carry a combined nameplate capacity of 228.7 MW (about 214 MW net summer). The plant sits on the site of the former Hallam sodium-graphite nuclear reactor, which ran briefly in the early 1960s before being decommissioned. NPPD once explored converting a Sheldon unit to burn hydrogen supplied by an adjacent Monolith Materials carbon-black plant, but the two companies abandoned that plan in 2020. Both units remain in service today, and NPPD has stated it has no plans to retire any of its generating facilities as it builds new gas-fired capacity (Princeton Road Station) nearby.
