ArcelorMittal Calvert (formerly AM/NS Calvert)

Large load · 1 AM/NS WAY, Calvert, AL

ArcelorMittal Calvert in Calvert, Alabama, is a 5.3 million tonne a year flat-rolled steel complex built by ThyssenKrupp and opened in 2010. For its first fifteen years it rolled purchased slabs; in June 2025 a new 1.5 million tonne electric arc furnace and caster made its first heat, turning Calvert into a full melt-and-roll steelmaker and adding a large arc-furnace load to Alabama Power's system. ArcelorMittal took full ownership from Nippon Steel the same month, is building an electrical steel (NOES) line on the site, and is studying a second EAF.

Overview

Alabama Power built the transmission to serve the site for ThyssenKrupp, the plant's original owner. Its feasibility studies called for two 230 kV lines into a six-breaker ring bus on the plant site, 230 kV feeds sized for the electric arc furnaces then planned, and two customer substations for the rest of the plant. The carbon-steel melt shop was only built in 2025. No megawatt figure for the new furnace's load has been published, and a furnace transformer rating would not measure site demand.

Profile

The new melt shop
ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel's joint venture built a 1.5 million tonne a year EAF and caster designed to supply exposed automotive grades. First heat came in June 2025, completing the shift from a slab-conversion mill to a steelmaker with melting, rolling and finishing. A seven-year agreement for about 750,000 tonnes a year of U.S.-melted slabs from Nippon Steel covers part of the remaining slab need.
Ownership and expansion
ArcelorMittal completed its purchase of Nippon Steel's 50% stake on June 18, 2025, and renamed the plant ArcelorMittal Calvert. On the same site it is building a non-grain-oriented electrical steel mill of about 150,000 tonnes a year, whose annealing lines use electric furnaces. In July 2026 executives said they were studying a second EAF at Calvert while the first continues to ramp up.
