Cascade Steel Rolling Mills
Large load · 3200 OR-99W, Mcminnville, OR
Cascade Steel Rolling Mills is an electric arc furnace and rolling mill in McMinnville, Oregon, owned by Radius Recycling, formerly Schnitzer Steel. Radius operates more than 100 metal and auto recycling facilities across North America, and the mill sits inside that network. Toyota Tsusho agreed in March 2025 to acquire Radius and completed the deal in July 2025, planning new investment in the McMinnville mill. The plant takes 230 kV service from the Bonneville Power Administration, and its arc furnace has run with a static var compensator since 2002. A May 2021 fire halted the melt shop for a few months before production resumed.
Overview
Radius Recycling agreed on March 13, 2025 to be acquired by Toyota Tsusho Corporation, according to NW Labor Press. Waste Dive reported the purchase price at $907 million and said Toyota Tsusho America completed the acquisition on July 11, 2025. Radius kept its branding, headquarters, management and existing facilities under the deal. Toyota Tsusho plans to invest in Radius' business in North America, including its electric arc furnace mill in McMinnville, Oregon. Radius processed about 4.5 million long tons of ferrous recycled metal and 334,000 long tons of nonferrous recycled metal in 2024.
Profile
- Power supply and the arc furnace
- Hitachi Energy describes the mill's electric arc furnace melt shop as operating a Static Var Compensator since 2002. The plant is fed by a 230 kV system, and the 230 kV power supplier is the Bonneville Power Administration. The compensator was installed for two reasons: to let the furnace run at higher power without breaching BPA's flicker requirements, and to improve power quality. Hitachi says it would allow EAF power to rise from 65 MW to 84 MW, the maximum yield of that furnace. Those figures describe the furnace itself rather than the whole site.
- The 2021 fire and restart
- A large fire in May 2021 damaged equipment and halted production at Cascade for a few months, according to Global Energy Monitor, which says the plant restarted in August 2021. Steel Market Update reported that Schnitzer Steel resumed production at Cascade Steel Rolling Mills in McMinnville after a late-May fire damaged the melt shop. The facility was accepting orders after restarting several weeks earlier than expected. The restart came about three months after the fire and preceded the 2025 ownership change.
