Chevron Products, El Segundo Refinery
Large load · 324 W EL SEGUNDO BLVD, El Segundo, CA
Chevron's El Segundo refinery in El Segundo, California, is a 290,000 barrel-per-day petroleum refinery that Chevron says continues to make transportation fuels. A fire hit the Isomax distillate unit in October 2025, and Chevron said the refinery kept running at diminished rates while units were restarted. Chevron's combined heat and power facility was built in 1987, and the California Energy Commission describes it as the oldest in the state's current fleet.
Overview
In October 2025 a fire hit the Isomax unit at the El Segundo refinery. Chevron said the refinery continues to operate and create transportation fuels, although at diminished rates, while units were restarted. Quantum Commodity Intelligence reported in February 2026 that Chevron was seen fully restarting the fire-damaged distillate-making Isomax unit at the 290,000 bpd El Segundo refinery by early March. That schedule is the most specific public statement of when the damaged unit was expected to return to service.
Profile
- Cogeneration history
- The refinery's combined heat and power facility dates to 1987. The California Energy Commission's 2021 Petroleum Watch report says the El Segundo CHP facility, built in 1987, is the oldest in California's current fleet, and that refineries are unique in their high level of CHP use. An earlier environmental review filed under the title El Segundo Cogeneration Project describes Chevron USA's proposal to construct a 76 MW cogeneration facility at the El Segundo refinery, providing process and motive steam to the refinery.
- Refinery scale and output
- The refinery is reported at 290,000 barrels per day of throughput, a figure from the February 2026 Quantum Commodity Intelligence report, which described the restart as expected by early March. Chevron says the refinery continues to operate and create transportation fuels after the October 2025 fire, at diminished rates. The affected unit is the distillate-making Isomax unit, so the outage concerns distillate output in a refinery that kept running. The refinery's combined heat and power system was built in 1987, according to the state's fleet review.
