CMC Steel Arizona (Mesa)

Large load · 11444 E GERMANN RD, Mesa, AZ

CMC Steel Arizona in Mesa is Commercial Metals Company's two-mill steel complex: the original Arizona 1 micro mill, built in 2009, and the adjacent Arizona 2 micro mill, which started up in 2023. Both melt recycled scrap in electric arc furnaces and roll rebar and merchant bar for West Coast construction markets. Salt River Project serves the site, and the mill has subscribed to SRP solar output since 2020. Neither CMC nor SRP has published the complex's demand in MW.

Overview

CMC built its first Mesa micro mill in 2009. In August 2020 it announced a third micro mill company-wide, Arizona 2, next to the first one. Arizona 2 was designed to be the first mill to produce merchant bar in a continuous cast-and-roll process, with about 350,000 tons of rebar and 150,000 tons of merchant bar a year. Placing the two mills side by side was meant to let them share staff and production support.

Profile

Electric supply and the Q-One furnace feed
SRP supplies the site. Arizona 2 uses Danieli's Q-One power-feeding system, which lets the electric arc furnace and ladle furnace connect directly to renewable sources; CMC said this reduces transmission losses compared with conventional furnace supply. Since December 2020 the Mesa mill has received power from SRP's 100 MW Saint Solar array in Coolidge under SRP's Sustainable Energy program. The array is shared with other SRP customers, so its rating is not the mill's load.
Start-up and ramp of Arizona 2
CMC cold-commissioned the Arizona 2 melt shop and rolling mill in spring 2023 and produced the first rebar bundle that summer, expecting the full run rate by the end of fiscal 2024. By the fourth quarter of fiscal 2025 the mill had reached positive adjusted EBITDA, and CMC said it was shipping more merchant products to West Coast customers from it.
