CMC Steel New Jersey
Large load · 1 CROSSMAN RD N, Sayreville, NJ
CMC Steel New Jersey is an electric arc furnace steel mill on North Crossman Road in Sayreville, Middlesex County, New Jersey. Commercial Metals Company took over the Sayreville long-products mill from Gerdau in November 2018, as part of a $600 million purchase that also covered mills in Knoxville, Tennessee; Jacksonville, Florida; and Rancho Cucamonga, California. A December 2025 visit by Rutgers materials science students described the plant as a working steel mill producing high-quality steel for American infrastructure. CMC's product literature says its U.S. mills make rebar and merchant bar using electric arc furnace technology. The mill was left without power during Hurricane Sandy in 2012, and Gerdau Long Steel North America planned to resume operations the following week.
Overview
The Rutgers Materials Science and Engineering department hosted a visit to CMC Steel New Jersey in Sayreville in December 2025, with support from the Association for Iron and Steel Technology. The department's account describes the mill as a working steel mill producing high-quality steel for American infrastructure. CMC's own product page says the company uses advanced electric arc furnace technology and strict quality standards to make its steels. Its long-steel line runs from rebar and merchant bar to wire rod and fence posts, and CMC says its rebar is produced in U.S. mills with consistent quality and broad grade availability.
Profile
- Ownership and the 2018 Gerdau acquisition
- Gerdau finalized the sale of four U.S. mini-mills and nearly three dozen rebar fabrication shops to Texas-based Commercial Metals Co. in November 2018. With the acquisition completed, Commercial Metals took control of Gerdau's long products mills in Knoxville, Tennessee; Jacksonville, Florida; Sayreville, New Jersey; and Rancho Cucamonga, California, in addition to 33 fabrication facilities. The company said it was welcoming approximately 3,200 employees of those operations. The transaction was reported as a $600 million acquisition of Gerdau's long mills and rebar fabrication network.
- 2012 Hurricane Sandy outage and restart
- Hurricane Sandy left the Sayreville mill without power in 2012. In a November 8, 2012 report, Gerdau Long Steel North America said it planned to resume operations at the Sayreville, New Jersey, steel mill the following week. A company spokeswoman said restart work was underway and that the mill expected to be running the next week, possibly sooner. The stoppage in that report is attributed to the loss of power, which makes the plant's continuous grid supply a direct condition of its operation.
