Ervin Amasteel Division (Adrian, MI)
Large load · 915 TABOR ST, Adrian, MI
Ervin Amasteel Division makes steel shot and grit at 915 Tabor Street in Adrian, Michigan, in Lenawee County. The parent, Ervin Industries, is headquartered in Ann Arbor. The plant melts scrap in one 40-ton electric arc furnace (EAF) and runs that furnace overnight to take advantage of lower electricity costs. A Michigan inspection on December 20, 2023 found about 100 employees and operation 24 hours a day, five days a week. The grid footprint on record is a single EAF load scheduled around off-peak power, and the plant's air permit lapsed in March 2023 while a consent order keeps it under the old permit terms.
Overview
The melt shop charges scrap steel into a 40-ton electric arc furnace. A magnetic grabber fills the charge ladle with set amounts of different scrap so the melt meets its composition target. Inspectors recorded that the EAF is operated at night to take advantage of reduced electricity cost, and that the facility runs 24 hours a day, five days a week with about 100 employees. Two dust collectors in the melt shop vent internally, and a separate baghouse serves the EAF. After melting, the shot is formed by a proprietary process and conveyed to drying, heat treating, screening and grit forming.
Profile
- Air permit lapse and violation notice
- The renewable operating permit for the site, MI-ROP-B1754-2018, was issued March 5th, 2018. An ROP renewal application was not submitted before the September 5th, 2021 deadline, so the facility did not obtain an application shield before its permit expired on March 5th, 2023. Under a consent order the plant remains subject to the terms of MI-ROP-B1754-2018 until a new permit is issued. During the December 20, 2023 inspection, staff found that a cartridge dust collector had been installed without a permit to install. Michigan's January 18, 2024 violation notice cites that installation as a violation of Rule 201.
- Company and product history
- Ervin Industries is headquartered in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and maintains Amasteel manufacturing facilities in Tipton, UK, and in Adrian and Butler, Pennsylvania. The company's abrasives are made with proprietary processes developed from John Ervin's original 1938 patent for steel shot and grit production. AMASTEEL products serve automotive, maritime, foundry, bridge construction and rail markets. The Adrian site makes the steel shot and grit that the company sells into those markets, as described in the state inspection record.
