Ferroglobe Beverly (Globe Metallurgical)
Large load · 1595 SPARLING RD, Waterford, OH
Globe Metallurgical's ferroalloy plant at 1595 Sparling Road in Waterford, Washington County, Ohio, known as the Beverly plant, is part of Ferroglobe's US silicon metal and ferrosilicon business. It operates five electric arc furnaces in two furnace shops and makes silicon metal and ferrosilicon. Furnace power is a dominant cost for the products, and in 2025 Ferroglobe converted one Beverly furnace from silicon metal to ferrosilicon.
Overview
The plant runs electric arc furnaces numbered 1, 2, 3, 5 and 7. EAFs 1, 2 and 3 are in Shop 1 and EAFs 5 and 7 are in Shop 2. In April 2013 the company modified EAF No. 5 to increase the furnace's capacity, a change that the federal government later alleged raised sulfur dioxide emissions.
Profile
- 2023 Clean Air Act consent decree
- In July 2023 Globe Metallurgical agreed to pay a $2.6 million civil penalty, install an estimated $6.5 million in new and improved air pollution controls and cap the sulfur content of the inputs to its furnaces. The decree sets separate sulfur limits for silicon metal production (0.70 percent) and ferrosilicon production (0.75 percent by default), and was filed in the Southern District of Ohio.
- 2025 furnace conversion to ferrosilicon
- On Ferroglobe's fourth-quarter 2025 earnings call, management said it had converted one furnace at Beverly from silicon metal to ferrosilicon in 2025, alongside two European furnaces converted in January 2026, and that asset utilization in the United States was recovering by the fourth quarter of 2025. The company pointed to US antidumping and countervailing duties on major ferrosilicon exporters as improving ferrosilicon economics.
