GM Kokomo Operations
Large load · 2100 E LINCOLN RD, Kokomo, IN
GM's Kokomo Operations at 2603 South Goyer Road makes automotive electronic components on a site dating to 1936. The plant is owned through General Motors Components Holdings and has been through a long decline in headcount, from about 15,000 workers at its peak to roughly 100 by 2023, according to UAW leaders' account of the plant. GM told the Detroit Free Press in 2023 that the plant is not closed and continues its regular production schedule, even as much of its floor space sits empty.
Overview
GM's own facility page states that the Kokomo site produces automotive electronic components and lists its address at 2603 South Goyer Road in Kokomo, Indiana. The site has thick film printing operations and electronic assembly of engine control modules, transmission control modules, safety electronics and sensors, among other products. Indiana Chamber of Commerce material describes General Motors Components Holdings' Kokomo facility as an electronics manufacturing operation with a history back to 1936 and more than two million square feet of manufacturing space.
Profile
- Workforce decline
- A UAW video shot inside the plant in May 2023 showed large areas of empty production floor. Shawn Fain, the union's president and a Kokomo native, said the plant has 2.5 million square feet of floor space and that more than 2 million of it is empty. He said the workforce, which once numbered about 15,000, now stands at about 100 people. A GM spokesman could not confirm the claim about the last semiconductor shipments but said the plant continues its regular production schedule and has made no announcement about closing it.
- 2017 semiconductor exit and 2020 ventilator run
- GM announced in 2017 that it would cease semiconductor production at Kokomo by mid-2017 because investing in new equipment would be cost prohibitive, cutting 160 jobs. In 2020 GM handed control of the plant to a ventilator maker to help build critical care ventilators, and it hired more than 1,000 temporary workers to help current employees produce 30,000 ventilators by the end of August. The site's recent history is one of shifting from chip production and its legacy electronics lines toward a smaller set of electronic assembly work.
