Mississippi Silicon Burnsville

Large load · 80 CR 210, Burnsville, MS

Mississippi Silicon operates a silicon metal plant at Burnsville in Tishomingo County, Mississippi, with two submerged-arc electric furnaces supplied by SMS Siemag and a combined capacity of 36,000 metric tons a year. The Tennessee Valley Authority is its electricity provider. The company says it was the first domestic raw silicon metal plant built in 40 years and supplies about 10% of the silicon metal used in the United States. Neither the company nor TVA has published the furnaces' electrical demand.

Overview

The 170,000-square-foot plant has two submerged-arc furnaces designed and installed by SMS Siemag with a total capacity of 36,000 metric tons a year. SMS also supplied the electrode columns, material handling, hydraulic systems and electrical and automation systems. The furnaces have rotating shells to reduce cold spots in the melt and to prevent carbide deposits on the furnace walls. Silicon metal is refined from ore in electric arc furnaces to a purity of 95% or greater. The supplier's 2014 announcement gave a slightly lower combined capacity of 33,000 tons a year.

Profile

Power from the Tennessee Valley Authority
Mississippi Silicon said that aggressive recruitment by the Mississippi Development Authority, the electricity provider Tennessee Valley Authority and Tishomingo County officials sealed the choice of Burnsville. At the plant's opening the company thanked the Mississippi Development Authority, Tishomingo County and TVA for support. TVA's contract terms and the plant's megawatt demand are not published in these sources.
Ownership and market position
Mississippi Silicon is a joint venture of the Vicintin family, Brazilian investors who control The Rima Group, and CleanTech LLC, a private-equity investment group. The $200 million project broke ground in January 2014 and held its grand opening in 2015. In April 2025 the company, based in Burnsville, joined Ferroglobe USA in filing a petition for trade investigations into silicon metal imports from five countries.
