Overview
Nucor Steel Berkeley has operated along the Cooper River since 1996, and Nucor has invested $1.3 billion in the plant. It makes flat-rolled sheet steel from recycled metal and other products, with a workforce of 975 people in 2022. Output is up to 3.5 million tons of flat-rolled sheet and structural steel a year, for the agriculture, automotive, appliance and construction industries among others.

Santee Cooper also provided a grant to support the air separation unit project and another to help pay for upgrades at the site, alongside a grant from the SC Department of Commerce Coordinating Council for Economic Development. - On August 30, 2022 Nucor announced $200 million of mill modernization over five years, including a new air separation unit to be operated by its UIG LLC subsidiary and supply all the industrial gases the mill needs. On September 28, 2022 it announced a $425 million galvanizing line expected to be complete in mid-2025, adding about 50 jobs.
