Nucor Steel Decatur

Large load · 4301 IVERSON BLVD, Trinity, AL

Nucor Steel Decatur, at 4301 Iverson Boulevard in Trinity, Alabama, is one of Nucor's main flat-rolled sheet mills. It melts scrap in electric arc furnaces, casts thin slabs and rolls hot- and cold-rolled sheet, with about 2.5 million short tons a year of EAF sheet capacity as of 2018. It was built in the 1990s as Trico Steel and restarted under Nucor in 2002. Nucor has not published the site's serving utility or its contracted demand.

Overview

Trico Steel built the 1.9 million ton-a-year flat-rolled mill starting in 1995 and began operating in 1997. Trico, a partnership of LTV, Sumitomo Metals and Corus, shut the mill in March 2001 when LTV went bankrupt. Nucor bought the assets in July 2002, renamed the mill Nucor Steel Decatur, and restarted it in June 2002 with a target of three million tons within two years.

Profile

Capacity and casting upgrades
In 2018 Nucor disclosed a $4 million upgrade to the mill's two casters, adding a segment to each to raise flat-rolled capacity by 80,000 short tons a year on top of 2.5 million short tons of EAF capacity and 700,000 short tons of cold-mill annealing. In July 2026 Primetals Technologies said Nucor Steel Decatur had chosen it for a three-year revamp of the continuous thin-slab caster: wider, more robust segment frames, readiness for dynamic soft-core reduction, and equipment built and commissioned in Alabama.
A towers plant next door
In February 2023 Nucor announced a $125 million transmission tower plant for its Nucor Towers & Structures unit, next to the Decatur sheet mill, with hot-dip galvanizing and about 200 jobs. Nucor's release thanked the Tennessee Valley Authority among its economic development partners. Nucor began pole production at the Alabama Towers & Structures plant in the third quarter of 2025, adding a separate load on the same campus.
