Nucor Steel Kingman
Large load · 3000 HIGHWAY 66 SOUTH, Kingman, AZ
Nucor Steel Kingman, just outside Kingman in Mohave County, Arizona, is a bar mill that rolls wire rod and rebar. In 2025 it gained a $100 million electric arc furnace melt shop rated at 600,000 tons a year. Power comes from Mohave Electric Cooperative and its wholesale supplier AEPCO under an Electric Energy Services Agreement that went before the Arizona Corporation Commission in 2024. A 50 MW / 200 MWh behind-the-meter battery smooths the furnace's load. The mill's contracted demand in megawatts has not been published.
Overview
Arizona Electric Power Cooperative (AEPCO) and Mohave Electric Cooperative jointly applied to the Arizona Corporation Commission for approval of an Electric Energy Services Agreement with Nucor Steel Kingman. A proposed order was on the Commission's July 9-10, 2024 open meeting agenda under Dockets E-01773A-24-0087 and E-01750A-24-0087. The mill's substation sits in Mohave Electric Cooperative territory. Nucor's general manager credits 'utility partners' with helping deliver the battery that supports the expansion.
Profile
- Battery and solar behind the meter
- Ameresco built, owns and runs a 50 MW / 200 MWh battery of 58 Tesla Megapack 2XL units at a Nucor substation, under a 20-year Storage Services Agreement, and AEPCO operates it. Construction started in December 2024 and commercial operation was announced in October 2025. Ameresco says the system smooths the large load swings from the new arc furnace, eases strain on the regional grid and supports the expanded production. A solar array is scheduled for 2026: Ameresco gives it as 30 MW AC, while earlier coverage said 25 MW AC. The 50 MW battery rating is storage capacity, not the mill's load.
- From rolling mill to melt shop
- Kingman was a rolling mill that turned purchased billets into coiled wire rod and rebar. In August 2022 Nucor announced a $100 million melt shop to make its own steel there: 600,000 tons a year, about 140 jobs, and two years of construction pending permits. City officials and Nucor celebrated the melt shop's grand opening in fall 2025, with the job count put at 160.
