Qorvo US, Inc. (Hillsboro, Oregon wafer fab)
Large load · 2300 NE BROOKWOOD PKWY, Hillsboro, OR
Qorvo's Hillsboro, Oregon wafer fab is the company's main gallium arsenide (GaAs) site. The plant came to Qorvo through the 2015 combination of RFMD and TriQuint Semiconductor, when the company designated Hillsboro as the primary GaAs factory and placed new designs there under a center-of-excellence model. In 2025 Qorvo moved GaAs wafer production from Greensboro, North Carolina into Hillsboro, and in November 2025 it agreed to merge with Skyworks Solutions in a deal valuing the combined company at about $22 billion.
Overview
Qorvo reported in its fiscal first-quarter 2026 results, published in early August 2025, that it had transitioned gallium arsenide (GaAs) wafer production from its Greensboro, North Carolina fab to the Hillsboro, Oregon fab. On the November 2025 earnings call, the company listed the transition of GaAs wafer production from North Carolina to Oregon among its prior actions and said it was on track to shut down the North Carolina facility once the transfer is complete. The same call described the factory footprint as positioned to make GaAs, GaN, BAW, SAW and advanced multi-chip modules onshore in the United States, and Qorvo said it expected to spend on expanding capacity and new technologies in the coming year, though less than it spent that year.
Profile
- Origins of the Hillsboro factory
- Qorvo was formed when RFMD and TriQuint Semiconductor combined. Oregon Business reported that TriQuint's Hillsboro factory was similar to RFMD's Greensboro plant, and that investment analysts saw the duplicate factories as a possible source of cost savings. Qorvo answered by assigning each plant a long-term role. The Hillsboro factory, which makes communications chips from gallium arsenide, became the company's main site for that material, and under the center-of-excellence model all new designs would be done in Hillsboro. The reorganization was presented as affirming plans to maintain Hillsboro operations and save jobs, and Greensboro also kept gallium arsenide production at that time.
- Skyworks merger
- Skyworks Solutions and Qorvo agreed to merge in a cash-and-stock transaction that values the combined enterprise at approximately USD 22 billion. Qorvo shareholders will receive USD 32.50 in cash and 0.960 of a Skyworks common share for each Qorvo share. Skyworks shareholders are expected to own roughly 63% of the combined company and Qorvo shareholders roughly 37%. Phil Brace, CEO of Skyworks, will serve as chief executive officer of the merged company, while Bob Bruggeworth, Qorvo's CEO, will join the board. Qorvo's CEO said the combination would let the companies significantly expand their presence in defence and aerospace, edge IoT, AI data centre, automotive and other industries.
