Robert Bosch Semiconductor LLC
Large load · 7501 FOOTHILLS BLVD., Roseville, CA
Robert Bosch Semiconductor operates the Roseville, California wafer fab that Bosch acquired from TSI Semiconductors in August 2023. Bosch is converting the fab to silicon carbide (SiC) production and says it is investing up to $2 billion in the project. Sample production has begun, and the company plans first commercial chips on 200-millimeter wafers in 2026. The site has more than 300 staff, and it will do both front-end device manufacturing and back-end testing, sorting and dicing. It will be Bosch's first semiconductor production site in the United States.
Overview
Bosch signed a preliminary memorandum of terms with the Commerce Department in December 2024 for up to $225 million in proposed CHIPS direct funding, and later announced a definitive agreement for the same amount. Bosch says the investment supports up to $2 billion for the transformation of the Roseville fab. The site has also received a $25 million California Competes Tax Credit from the Governor's Office of Business and Economic Development. The company has developed a new cleanroom space and a high-tech manufacturing line for SiC chip production at the site.
Profile
- Production timeline and workforce
- Bosch began sample production in Roseville and plans its first commercial chips on 200-millimeter wafers in 2026. The company says it kept nearly all of the roughly 250 associates who were on site during the conversion and now reports more than 300 staff. Bosch is funding local semiconductor training, including grants to Sierra College. Hoodline reports the plant is expected to begin 200-millimeter SiC wafer production in 2026 as the plant is modernized, and that Bosch will move ahead with equipment upgrades and site work as federal approvals move forward.
- Scope and market role
- The Roseville site will perform both front-end device manufacturing and back-end testing, sorting and dicing. Commerce Department materials say the facility could represent up to 40 percent of U.S.-based SiC manufacturing capacity. Silicon carbide chips cut energy loss in power conversion, which improves electric vehicle range and charging efficiency, and the chips serve automotive, telecommunications and defense customers. Bosch says the Roseville site is its first semiconductor production site in the United States and one of 20 Bosch manufacturing sites with U.S. operations.
