SSAB Alabama (Mobile)
Large load · 12400 US-43, Axis, AL
SSAB Alabama in Axis, northern Mobile County, is a scrap-fed electric arc furnace mill making heavy steel plate, including quenched and tempered grades. IPSCO built and opened it in 2001 and SSAB bought it in 2007. Alabama Power serves the mill; the rates it negotiated for SSAB's 2008 expansion were not disclosed, and no site megawatt figure has been published. A $74 million heat-treat expansion is due for completion in 2027.
Overview
The mill is an Alabama Power customer. When SSAB chose Axis over its Iowa mill for a roughly $460 million expansion in 2008, the state's economic development office named transportation and utilities as the two deciding factors. Alabama Power declined to disclose the rates it negotiated but said its competitive rates helped a power-intensive project, and the expansion added three more manufacturing processes, making the plant more power-intensive still.
Profile
- The mill
- SSAB's Mobile and Montpelier, Iowa sites are its U.S. electric arc furnace plants, producing heavy plate from scrap, including its most advanced quenched and tempered grades. About 650 people work at Mobile. The EAF shares a baghouse with the ladle metallurgy furnace under ADEM's major source operating permit.
- Expansions
- The 2008 expansion added a heat-treating mill, a vacuum degasser and a continuous variable crown system, quadrupling quenched and tempered plate capacity. In April 2025 SSAB announced a further $74 million to expand heat-treat capacity with a new building and tempering furnace, starting in 2025 and due to finish in 2027.
