Steel Dynamics' Heartland Division works in Terre Haute, Indiana, in the Vigo County Industrial Park, finishing hot-rolled coil into pickled, cold-rolled, galvanized, galvalume and painted sheet. Steel Dynamics Inc. of Fort Wayne acquired the operation as Heartland Steel Processing. Its 2024 line additions followed a 2021 expansion plan.

Steel Dynamics Inc. of Fort Wayne, Indiana, completed its $400 million acquisition of the Heartland Steel Processing operation in Terre Haute. The company said the deal would expand its annual flat roll steel shipping capacity to 8.4 million tons and its total steel shipping capability to 12.4 million tons. Steel Dynamics described the plant as producing higher-margin flat roll steel and said it would broaden the company's value-added product portfolio. The Heartland Division's own website says the business became part of the Steel Dynamics flat roll team in 2018.

- Heartland's own description says the division processes hot-rolled coils into pickled and oiled, cold-rolled and galvanized products. The division says it has the annual capability to pickle and cold-reduce one million tons, with the ability to galvanize 360,000 tons. Its facility includes a continuous pickle line, a two-stand reversing cold mill, batch annealing bases, a temper mill and a galvanizing line. In mid 2024, SMS group and Steel Dynamics celebrated the first coils from two new production lines at Heartland, a continuous galvanizing line and a color coating line, which SMS says is part of an effort to increase capacity for coated steel.
- 2021 expansion and tax abatement
- In 2021 Steel Dynamics announced plans to invest $231 million and add nearly 400,000 square feet of space to its Terre Haute plant, including new galvanizing and paint lines. The company requested a 10-year tax abatement, and the Vigo County Council approved it unanimously. The project was expected to create more than 80 jobs, and the Terre Haute Economic Development Corp. said the new jobs would come with an average annual wage of $80,000, excluding benefits.
