Steel Dynamics' Columbus Flat Roll Division in Lowndes County, Mississippi, is an electric arc furnace mill capable of producing 3.4 million tons of steel a year on a 1,400-acre site. It makes hot roll, cold roll and coated sheet, and is one of three flat roll mills in Steel Dynamics' Flat Roll Group. The Tennessee Valley Authority is a named partner in its expansions. Neither the company nor TVA has published the mill's electrical demand or supply contract.
Overview
The Columbus Division was commissioned in 2007 as one of the newest and most technologically advanced mini-mills in North America, with 76-inch-wide hot roll, 74-inch-wide cold roll and 72-inch-wide galvanized sheet capability. Steel Dynamics describes it as capable of producing 3.4 million tons of steel annually. Its flat roll products include hot-rolled bands, floor plate, pickled and cold-rolled sheet, and galvanized and galvannealed sheet.

- In July 2014 Steel Dynamics agreed to acquire 100% of Severstal Columbus from OAO Severstal for US$1.625 billion in cash. The purchase expanded the company's annual steel shipping capacity to 11.0 million tons, about a 40% increase, and added exposure to the OCTG and automotive segments.
- Paint line expansion and TVA partnership
- In March 2017 Steel Dynamics opened a new $100 million paint line at Columbus with an annual coating capacity of 250,000 tons. The company thanked the state of Mississippi, the Mississippi Development Authority, Lowndes County, TVA and the Appalachian Regional Commission for their partnership as it expanded. The role of TVA as electricity supplier to the mill is not stated in the announcement.
