Tower Semiconductor San Antonio (Fab 9)
Large load · 9651 WESTOVER HILLS BLVD, San Antonio, TX
Tower Semiconductor's San Antonio operation is Fab 9, an 8-inch wafer fab on Westover Hills Boulevard that Tower bought from Maxim Integrated in 2016. Tower told investors on its first-quarter 2026 call that it is ramping silicon photonics production at Fab 9 alongside Fab 2 in Migdal Haemek, Fab 3 in Newport Beach and Fab 7 in Uozu, Japan. Tower reported Fab 9 at 80% utilization in that quarter. The 2016 acquisition came with a 15-year supply agreement under which Tower manufactures products for Maxim in the San Antonio facility. A Texas state filing from 2024 also records a small building addition at the site, which closed out that year.
Overview
Tower Semiconductor Ltd. completed the acquisition of an 8-inch wafer fabrication facility in San Antonio, Texas from Maxim Integrated Products, Inc. Tower announced the $40 million acquisition in November, and said it would expand the company's worldwide manufacturing capacity. The companies also signed a long-term supply agreement of 15 years, under which Tower manufactures products for Maxim in the San Antonio facility, in quantities that allow a gradual ramp of third-party products. Tower's chief executive said the company had already completed first qualifications of its high-demand, high-volume flows with Maxim's approval.
Profile
- Silicon photonics ramp in 2026
- On its first-quarter 2026 call, Tower said it achieved first-flow silicon photonics revenue shipments from Fab 2 and Fab 7 during the quarter, and that its first silicon photonics wafers from Fab 7 reached a 95% yield. Fab 9 in San Antonio is one of the four sites where Tower said silicon photonics production is ramping. Tower reported first-quarter utilization of 80% at Fab 9, against full utilization at Fab 7.
