The U.S. Steel Midwest Plant in Portage, Indiana is a steel finishing facility that operates as part of Gary Works, about 10 miles east of Gary. Its principal products are tin mill products and hot-dip galvanized, cold-rolled and electrical lamination steels for the automotive, construction, container and electrical markets. The plant is regulated by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Gary Works employs about 4,000 people, and Nippon Steel's approved acquisition of U.S. Steel is funding a set of Gary Works investments.
Overview
Gary Works is the parent mill for the Midwest Plant. Nippon Steel has announced plans to spend about $300 million to revamp the largest of four blast furnaces that still operate at the Gary Works steel mill in 2026. The furnace is a coal-fueled furnace, and environmentalists and some community groups in Gary say it is a high polluting source that dumps toxins into the air. Nippon has promised to spend $3.1 billion on the Gary plant as part of an $11 billion investment promise on all U.S. Steel plants still operating in the United States. With the investment, the furnace should have its life extended by up to 20 years, according to the Gary Works reporting.
