Tonight's evening net-load ramp is today's primary decision test, running 4 PM-10 PM CDT as the gross-load peak gives way to the net-load climax.
- Forecast gross load peaks at 91,878 MW at 5 PM CDT, the highest daily peak in 90 days, while net load climbs 10,305 MW in one hour to a 71,196 MW peak at 9 PM CDT, elevated but inside the recent range.
- Since the prior issue, South Hub's local RT-DA residual widened outside its own band while West Hub's eased oppositely, and the forecast load peak rose 275 MW against available supply.
- The cleared day-ahead curve prices the evening above MetisCast's expected path, with the model's P50 averaging below the curve and diverging most near the 9 PM CDT hour.
- The call holds if the cross-location RT-DA spread stays inside its calibrated band and realized load tracks the forecast through the peak; it fails if either breaks down.

Evening ramp and wide RT-DA gap frame today's decision window#
Today's decision window, Aug 21, 4 PM CDT to 10 PM CDT, brackets the forecast gross-load peak of 91,878 MW at 5 PM CDT and the net-load climb into the 9 PM CDT hour.
Three developments matter most today. First, day-ahead evening premiums firmed since the prior issue: West Hub up $13.2/MWh, North Hub up $12.4/MWh. Second, the local RT-DA decomposition split by hub: South Hub's residual widened to $5.0/MWh, outside its own band, while West Hub's eased to -$3.1/MWh, both against the same -$14.1/MWh common component. Third, MetisCast's uncertainty band widens sharply into the 7 PM CDT hour, leaving tonight's price magnitude unsettled though its timing is well evidenced.
Watch three things: the cross-location RT-DA spread against its calibrated band, realized load against the frozen forecast vintage, and whether South or West carries tonight's surprise.

South Hub's RT-DA residual breaks its band as West Hub's eases#
Since the prior issue, day-ahead evening premiums firmed across the curve: North Hub's day-ahead price averaged $48.5/MWh over the trailing session, and West Hub's day-ahead average rose to $47.7/MWh, both up from the prior vintage. That common upward drift sits atop a real-time discount that widened to a mean -$14.1/MWh system-wide RT-DA spread, which explains most of every hub's raw real-time-to-day-ahead gap.
Beneath that shared move, the local residuals, what remains after removing the system-wide component, split apart. South Hub's residual widened to $5.0/MWh, now outside its own calibrated band and among the highest readings in its trailing history. West Hub's residual moved the other way, easing to -$3.1/MWh, also outside its band but in the opposite direction. Both sit on the same common discount already noted; only these two locations moved outside their own bands this period; the local move, not the shared discount, is what separates them.
MetisCast's evening path adds context without resolving which hub carries the surprise: the model's P50 averages $11.7/MWh below the cleared day-ahead curve across its frozen horizon, widening to a $56.6/MWh gap at Aug 21, 9 PM CDT. All five selected hubs' real-time prices peaked together at Aug 20, 7 PM CDT, consistent with the synchronized-peak timing already scored in the prior issue.
What is not visible in this data is why South and West diverged in opposite directions; no hub-specific outage or constraint evidence here explains it. Tonight's test is whether that divergence holds, narrows, or reverses as the evening ramp unfolds.

MetisCast ERCOT Hub Average probabilistic price forecast#
MetisCast prices ERCOT Hub Average -$11.7/MWh against the cleared day-ahead curve across 17 joined hours. Its P50 tops out at $91.3/MWh at Aug 21, 7 PM CDT while the market cleared $123.6/MWh at Aug 21, 8 PM CDT. The two agree on when the evening matters and disagree on what it pays.
Tonight's largest day-ahead awards align with the least calm residuals#
Houston Hub is where the system-wide RT-DA move holds cleanly: its local residual is $0.83/MWh, comfortably inside its own trailing window, even though a large common RT-DA component sits beneath every hub's overnight print. North Hub's residual, -$2.8/MWh, also stays inside its own band, though nearer the edge than Houston's.
Today's cleared day-ahead curve carries a similar spatial order into the evening. North Hub and West Hub post the highest awards among the four hubs, $136.8/MWh and $136.1/MWh, both at Aug 21, 8 PM CDT. Houston Hub clears mid-curve at $118.1/MWh, and South Hub clears lowest at $103.3/MWh.
West Hub's residual, already flagged as moving outside its own band, sits at the same location carrying the second-largest evening award, putting both signals on the same hub. Houston and North, the calmer overnight reads, do not carry the day's largest awards.
No outage or constraint evidence here attributes South's or West's residual moves to a specific location; the divergence itself is what the desk should watch through tonight's ramp, not an explained cause.

Outage margin reads ordinary while model uncertainty triples into evening#
Forecast generation outage capacity in effect for today's afternoon reads 7,676 MW, the 6th percentile of outage levels recorded in the same local hour and weekday across the trailing 90 days, a low reading that leaves far more capacity on line than in nearly all comparable hours. The derived capacity-less-load-and-AS margin comes in at 340.5 MW, sitting at the 30th percentile of trailing daily outcomes, a central reading rather than a compression extreme, and it excludes reserve, PRC and largest-contingency coverage not present in this data. Both readings sit inside their own recent ranges rather than at an extreme edge.
MetisCast's forward path for the ERCOT Hub Average widens sharply toward the evening. Its P10-P90 band averages $36.6/MWh across the frozen horizon issued at 7:45 AM CDT but stretches to $185.4/MWh at the 7 PM CDT hour, and its largest divergence from the cleared day-ahead award, $56.6/MWh, lands at 9 PM CDT.
That widening falls in the same week ERCOT's forecast desk frames as likely to exceed the all-time daily demand record every day from Aug 20 through Aug 24 under near 110°F heat and low wind, with gross demand already reported climbing from 83.1 GW to 88.1 GW into midweek. Permian industrial load growth and weaker wind output are separately cited as pushing ERCOT toward gas and battery dispatch this week. Read the band's width as tonight's forecast-dispersion fact alongside the calibrated RT-DA error band, not as a standalone reliability reading. South Hub exposure demands standalone monitoring beyond the system band#
Tonight's decision window turns on which hub carries the local RT-DA residual risk beneath the systemwide discount, not whether the discount holds. South Hub's local residual widened this session while West Hub's eased in the opposite direction; Houston Hub's stayed inside its own calibrated band, the calmer read tonight.
A desk holding South Hub exposure should not assume the systemwide error band prices that node: open the Hub detail chart grid for South and West side by side, and watch the ERCOT hub real-time price comparison chart for whether the split survives the ramp. If the cross-location median spread stays inside its calibrated band while one hub's residual keeps breaking its threshold, that is the regional overlay case: monitor the hub, not the system. Solar leaves the system at sunset and dispatchable units set price into the ramp; which hub's residual tracks that transition is what the window will settle.

| Aug 21, 4 PM CDT to Aug 21, 10 PM CDT | The cross-location median RT-DA spread stays between -$9.7/MWh and $8.5/MWh, its calibrated market-error band. Individual locations do not each have to reach their own award. Realized system load stays within 2,131 MW of the cutoff forecast vintage, the 90th percentile of 2160 lead-time-matched errors. | The cross-location median RT-DA spread falls below -$9.7/MWh. Realized system load falls more than 2,131 MW below the cutoff forecast vintage before the expected peak. |
| Scenario | Quantitative trigger | Interpretation | Action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price: tighter than priced | Cross-location median RT-DA spread above $8.5/MWh. | Real time settles above the cleared curve across locations. | Check reserves, renewable performance and constraints for the cause. |
| Price: softer than priced | Cross-location median RT-DA spread below -$9.7/MWh. | The cleared curve overstates the evening across locations. | Reprice the expected evening premium. |
| Load: outside its error band | Realized load more than 2,131 MW above or below the cutoff vintage. | Demand departs from the frozen forecast — one input to price formation alongside renewable error, availability, interchange, reserves and congestion, not a price verdict on its own. | Quantify the demand contribution, then inspect supply and constraint conditions before attributing the price outcome. |
| Regional overlay | The cross-location median stays inside its band while at least one location's absolute local residual exceeds its own threshold. | One location separates from the system rather than the system moving. | Open the exact-time map on that location's constraints and generation. |

| RT-DA convergence spread | Real-time minus day-ahead price at the same settlement point, averaged over joined hours. Temporal, not locational: it is not basis. |
| Common component | The RT-DA spread shared across all selected locations, taken from the hub-average location where one exists and otherwise the cross-location mean. |
| Local residual | A location's RT-DA spread minus the common component. This, not the raw spread, is what a regional claim has to clear. |
| Pre-storage net load | Gross load forecast minus wind and solar forecast, over the hours where both renewable forecasts are published. Storage charge/discharge and net interchange are not included, which is why the narrower name is used. |
| Resource outage capacity in effect | Capacity carried by the outage records in force at the issue cutoff, as published in the operator's hourly outage curve. This is not the market's full forced-plus-unplanned outage total, and the two should not be compared across issues. |
| MetisCast P50 versus cleared day-ahead | Model median minus the cleared day-ahead award for the same hour. The day-ahead leg is a market outcome, not an Ask the Grid forecast. The stated P10-P90 width is an arithmetic mean across the frozen horizon unless labeled otherwise. |

Forecast-vintage policy. Every input in this issue was published at or before the knowledge cutoff. Forecast series are the latest vintage available at that instant and are never revised after the fact; realized history used for percentiles is guarded by the same cutoff. The preceding issue's frozen vintage is stored with the issue, so a revision is measured against what was actually published, not against a later correction. Not covered by this issue's data: Residual dispatchable demand; Reserve, PRC and contingency coverage; Weather-to-market translation. Each limitation is stated where it applies rather than filled in by inference. The editorial gate considered and rejected 1 alternative thesis: The calculated capacity margin compresses into the evening peak — Capacity less load and the AS requirement reads 341 MW (inside the central recent range (30th percentile of 89; realized daily minimum committed capacity less load, holding today's AS requirement constant, trailing 90 days)), not an extreme against its own trailing distribution.
