Solar holds midday down; the 8 PM-9 PM net-load ramp is the test
Wednesday, Aug 19, 2026 · ERCOT data as of 8:00 AM CDT

Tonight's 8 PM-9 PM CDT net-load transition, not the afternoon peak, sets today's price risk.
- Forecast gross load tops out at 90,972 MW at 5 PM CDT, in the 99th percentile of the trailing 90-day distribution, while pre-storage net load climbs to 67,353 MW by 9 PM CDT after an 11,756 MW ramp in the 96th percentile of trailing ramps.
- Since the prior issue, the forecast peak rose 151 MW and systemwide RT-DA convergence tightened from a $7.18/MWh premium to a $3.01/MWh discount, while North Hub's local residual eased only slightly and stays outside its own band.
- MetisCast's price model runs a mean $9.2/MWh below the cleared day-ahead curve across the shared 17-hour horizon, diverging most by $51.1/MWh at the 9 PM CDT hour.
- The setup holds as long as the cross-location RT-DA spread stays between -$9.6/MWh and $8.4/MWh and realized load tracks the cutoff forecast within 2,182 MW.

Evening net-load transition, not the afternoon peak, sets today's risk#
Today's decision window is the 8 PM-9 PM CDT net-load transition, not the 5 PM CDT gross-load peak of 90,972 MW, a forecast up 151 MW since the prior issue.
Three developments matter since yesterday: systemwide RT-DA convergence tightened to a $3.01/MWh discount from a $7.18/MWh premium; North Hub's local residual eased $0.1/MWh to $3.2/MWh, still outside its own band; and MetisCast's P50 runs $9.2/MWh below the cleared day-ahead curve across 17 hours, widening to $51.1/MWh apart at 9 PM CDT.
ERCOT logged a 656 MW generation loss and a frequency dip to 59.961 Hz at 5:57 AM CDT on Aug 18; no price link appears in this data. Watch the cross-location RT-DA spread against -$9.6 to $8.4/MWh, load against the cutoff forecast within 2,182 MW, and North Hub's residual for a threshold break. Cleared day-ahead curve prices a bigger evening spike than the model does#
Since the previous issue, the common real-time to day-ahead convergence spread that all four hubs share averaged -$3.01/MWh across 24 joined hours, a reversal from the $7.18/MWh average premium real time carried over day-ahead awards in the prior issue. That reading sits in the middle of its own trailing 90-day range, not at an extreme. West Hub's and Houston Hub's real-time means eased to $30/MWh and $29.9/MWh, down from the elevated levels the prior issue carried, consistent with the softer systemwide spread.
Last night's realized hub peaks all landed at the Aug 18, 7 PM CDT hour: ERCOT Hub Average topped at $91.9/MWh, North Hub at $110.3/MWh, West Hub at $96.3/MWh, and Houston Hub at $88.5/MWh. Today's remaining-day cleared day-ahead awards, the vintage known at the Aug 19, 8 AM CDT cutoff, push that transition later and higher: South Hub's award peaks at $75/MWh at 9 PM CDT while North Hub's peaks at $103.5/MWh at 8 PM CDT, a spread of roughly one hour across hubs rather than one synchronized instant.
MetisCast's P50 vintage, issued Aug 19, 7:45 AM CDT, prices that same window lower. Across the 17 hours it shares with the cleared curve, its mean gap to the award is -$9.2/MWh, widening to -$51.1/MWh at the Aug 19, 9 PM CDT hour, where its own price peak lands an hour ahead of the award's, at 7 PM CDT versus 8 PM CDT. Its uncertainty band widens from a $25.8/MWh mean across the frozen horizon to roughly $121/MWh at that 7 PM CDT hour.
The evening's timing is confirmed across both sources; its magnitude is not, and only real-time settlement will resolve which side is closer. Today's live check is the cross-location RT-DA spread: the call holds while it stays between -$9.6/MWh and $8.4/MWh, and breaks below that floor if real time comes in softer than both the award and the model expect.

MetisCast ERCOT Hub Average probabilistic price forecast#
MetisCast prices ERCOT Hub Average -$9.2/MWh against the cleared day-ahead curve across 17 joined hours. Its P50 tops out at $62.4/MWh at Aug 19, 7 PM CDT while the market cleared $91.5/MWh at Aug 19, 8 PM CDT. The two agree on when the evening matters and disagree on what it pays.
North Hub's local residual breaks its band as hubs converge overnight#
ERCOT's hubs showed their widest separation of the period at Aug 18, 7 PM CDT: North Hub reached $110.3/MWh, West Hub $96.3/MWh, Houston Hub $88.5/MWh, and South Hub $72.3/MWh, the state the map still pins. By the Aug 19, 8 AM CDT cutoff, that gap had closed to a flat $18.49-$18.55/MWh band across all four hubs.
One location still separates beneath that overnight flatness. The systemwide -$3.01/MWh common RT-DA component explains most of each hub's spread, but North Hub's local residual is $3.2/MWh, the 91st percentile of its own rolling-window band and outside threshold. South Hub (-$0.6/MWh, 31st percentile), West Hub (-$0.5/MWh, 33rd percentile), and Houston Hub (-$2.0/MWh, 82nd percentile, still inside) stay inside their own bands, leaving North Hub as the one location carrying a live signal into tonight's ramp.

Outage capacity stays soft while heat stress builds into the evening#
Supply-side fundamentals stay easy against the demand strain building into tonight's peak. Forecast generation outage capacity for the 11 AM CDT hour is 8,368 MW, the 16th percentile of the same-hour-weekday trailing 90-day distribution, a soft reading that eases rather than tightens today's setup. Capacity less load and the ancillary-service requirement is 2,642.8 MW, the 76th percentile of its trailing 90-day range, modestly above the recent middle but well short of the top decile; reserve, PRC and largest-contingency data are not in this issue, so this reading stops at headroom, not a scarcity call. RUC committed capacity fell to a latest 2 MW from a 623.4 MW mean, down sharply from the prior issue's larger commitment, with no incremental reliability action carried overnight.
A 656 MW generation loss at Aug 18, 5:57 AM CDT dropped frequency to 59.961 Hz, an isolated event with no reserve data attached and no bearing on today's supply picture. Oncor's non-pay disconnect suspension and the DOE 202(c) authority to direct backup generation at large loads both point to sustained heat-driven demand stress carrying into today's operating window, context for tonight's ramp rather than a new price driver. Supply fundamentals here sit outside the model-versus-curve gap developed elsewhere in this issue. North Hub's live residual outranks South, West and Houston for tonight's watch#
North Hub's local RT-DA residual is the only node-level reading outside its own calibrated band; South Hub, West Hub and Houston Hub residuals sit inside theirs and show no comparable signal. That asymmetry, not the system-wide RT-DA mean, is what deserves the desk's attention tonight.
Three views matter today: the Hub detail chart grid isolates North Hub's residual against cleared awards, the ERCOT hub real-time price comparison chart shows whether North diverges further from the other three hubs across the 8 PM-9 PM CDT transition, and the MetisCast versus cleared day-ahead chart tracks whether the model's $9.2/MWh average discount narrows against the $91.5/MWh award at Aug 19, 8 PM CDT.
The read holds if the cross-location median RT-DA spread stays between -$9.6/MWh and $8.4/MWh and system load stays within 2,182 MW of the cutoff forecast; either break before the peak resets both calls.

| Aug 19, 4 PM CDT to Aug 19, 10 PM CDT | The cross-location median RT-DA spread stays between -$9.6/MWh and $8.4/MWh, its calibrated market-error band. Individual locations do not each have to reach their own award. Realized system load stays within 2,182 MW of the cutoff forecast vintage, the 90th percentile of 2160 lead-time-matched errors. | The cross-location median RT-DA spread falls below -$9.6/MWh. Realized system load falls more than 2,182 MW below the cutoff forecast vintage before the expected peak. |
| Scenario | Quantitative trigger | Interpretation | Action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price: tighter than priced | Cross-location median RT-DA spread above $8.4/MWh. | Real time settles above the cleared curve across locations. | Check reserves, renewable performance and constraints for the cause. |
| Price: inside the recent error band | Cross-location median RT-DA spread between -$9.6/MWh and $8.4/MWh. | The cleared curve is validated within its usual error. | Keep the existing operating plan. |
| Price: softer than priced | Cross-location median RT-DA spread below -$9.6/MWh. | The cleared curve overstates the evening across locations. | Reprice the expected evening premium. |
| Load: above forecast | Realized load more than 2,182 MW above the cutoff vintage. | Demand is contributing more pressure than the frozen forecast assumed. It is one input to price formation, alongside renewable error, availability, interchange, reserves and congestion. | Quantify the demand contribution, then inspect supply and constraint conditions before attributing the price outcome. |
| Load: tracking forecast | Realized load within 2,182 MW of the cutoff vintage. | Aggregate demand error does not explain a price surprise in this window. | Inspect renewable forecast error, unit availability, reserves, interchange and constraint activation. |
| Load: below forecast | Realized load more than 2,182 MW below the cutoff vintage. | Demand provides an easing contribution against the frozen forecast. | Determine whether supply-side conditions offset or amplify it before attributing the price outcome. |
| Regional overlay | The cross-location median stays inside its band while at least one location's absolute local residual exceeds its own threshold. | One location separates from the system rather than the system moving. | Open the exact-time map on that location's constraints and generation. |

| RT-DA convergence spread | Real-time minus day-ahead price at the same settlement point, averaged over joined hours. Temporal, not locational: it is not basis. |
| Common component | The RT-DA spread shared across all selected locations, taken from the hub-average location where one exists and otherwise the cross-location mean. |
| Local residual | A location's RT-DA spread minus the common component. This, not the raw spread, is what a regional claim has to clear. |
| Pre-storage net load | Gross load forecast minus wind and solar forecast, over the hours where both renewable forecasts are published. Storage charge/discharge and net interchange are not included, which is why the narrower name is used. |
| Resource outage capacity in effect | Capacity carried by the outage records in force at the issue cutoff, as published in the operator's hourly outage curve. This is not the market's full forced-plus-unplanned outage total, and the two should not be compared across issues. |
| MetisCast P50 versus cleared day-ahead | Model median minus the cleared day-ahead award for the same hour. The day-ahead leg is a market outcome, not an Ask the Grid forecast. The stated P10-P90 width is an arithmetic mean across the frozen horizon unless labeled otherwise. |

Forecast-vintage policy. Every input in this issue was published at or before the knowledge cutoff. Forecast series are the latest vintage available at that instant and are never revised after the fact; realized history used for percentiles is guarded by the same cutoff. The preceding issue's frozen vintage is stored with the issue, so a revision is measured against what was actually published, not against a later correction. This issue could not close 4 analytical gaps: residual dispatchable demand, reserve, prc and contingency coverage, weather-to-market translation, five-minute event-window response. Each is stated in the analysis rather than filled in by inference.
Source and quality note. 29 of 29 requested issue series were available; 16 longer-lookback series supported deterministic context. 10 event records were known at cutoff and 2 unchanged records were suppressed. Knowledge cutoff: Aug 19, 8:00 AM CDT.
