Overview

A. Finkl & Sons ordered a new electric melt shop from SMS Demag in 2008, with an AC electric arc furnace and a ladle furnace, for a new South Side site. The 90-ton furnace poured its first heat on June 2, 2011. Melt shop size is a furnace rating, not a measure of the site's electricity demand.

Profile

Moving production to 93rd Street, with its own substation
By January 2013 Finkl was phasing out its Lincoln Park plant and had spent more than $180 million equipping the 53-acre South Side site for melting, forging and machining. The new plant was built with its own electric substation and was planned to raise production fivefold to half a million tons of steel a year.
Part of Swiss Steel Group
Finkl Steel is a Swiss Steel Group company. It makes forging die steels, plastic mold steels, die casting tool steels and custom open-die forgings, processing over 200,000 tons of steel a year across production sites in Chicago, Detroit, Houston and Quebec, with melt shops in Chicago and Sorel, Quebec.
