Its footprint spans Mid-Atlantic load centers, Appalachian generation, and Midwestern wind; its transmission zones each carry their own history, utilities, and price personality; and its dispatch coordinates more generating capacity than any other US market. That scale is why PJM pairs its energy market with a forward capacity construct, the Reliability Pricing Model, that pays resources to be available years ahead, a structural opposite to ERCOT's energy-only bet.
Price formation is nodal and layered. A five-minute unverified LMP feed shows the market as it moves, an hourly verified series arrives after settlement review, and the day-ahead market clears the expectation the night before, so the same hour can be read three ways, and the gaps between them are where congestion and forecast error live. Day-ahead transmission constraint reports name the facilities the market expected to bind before the operating day began.
