Air Liquide Rodeo Hydrogen Plant
Large load · 1391 SAN PABLO AVE, Rodeo, CA
The Rodeo Hydrogen Plant is a steam methane reformer inside the Phillips 66 San Francisco Refinery at Rodeo, Contra Costa County, California. Air Liquide Large Industries U.S. LP owns and operates it. It began operating on September 29, 2009, and is permitted for 120 million standard cubic feet of hydrogen a day. The plant runs on PG&E natural gas and supplies the refinery with hydrogen, electricity and steam, so it sits behind the refinery's meter as a supplier of power rather than a stand-alone grid load.
Overview
Air Liquide announced on October 20, 2009 that its new hydrogen production unit began operations on September 29, 2009 on the site of ConocoPhillips' San Francisco refinery in Rodeo. The 142,000 Nm3/h steam methane reformer, owned and operated by Air Liquide Large Industries U.S. LP, was described as one of the largest hydrogen units in operation in the United States, and it brought Air Liquide to hydrogen units at 12 U.S. sites.
Profile
- What the plant supplies the refinery
- The Bay Area Air Quality Management District describes the plant as a hydrogen plant located within the Phillips 66 San Francisco Refinery that supplies the refinery with hydrogen, electricity and steam. It continues to process PG&E natural gas as feedstock and to combust PG&E natural gas as fuel gas.
- Permit changes for the Rodeo Renewed conversion
- With the Phillips 66 Rodeo Renewed conversion from petroleum to renewable fuels, Air Liquide applied to the Air District for changes to feedstocks, fuel gas and hydrogen product. Once Rodeo Renewed starts up, the plant begins processing renewable-based feedstock and fuel gas supplied by Phillips 66 and supplies partially renewable hydrogen back to the refinery. The changes are to methods of operation only, require no physical changes, and keep the plant inside its permitted 120 million standard cubic feet per day hydrogen rate and a maximum furnace firing rate of 1072 MM Btu/hr.
