Arkansas Steel Associates (Newport)

Large load · 2803 VAN DYKE ROAD, Newport, AR

Arkansas Steel Associates is an electric-furnace steel mill on 300 acres in Newport, Arkansas, owned equally by Sumitomo Corporation and Yamato Kogyo. It melts steel into billets and rolls flat bar and railroad tie plates, a product in which it is the leading North American producer. Entergy Arkansas serves the mill and counts it among its largest customers; since 2024 the mill's electricity use has been matched to carbon-free supply under Entergy's Go ZERO tariff.

Overview

ASA was founded in 1989 as a joint venture of Yamato Kogyo and Sumitomo Corporation. It makes steel in an electric furnace and sells billets, flat bar and railway track components, chiefly tie plates.

Profile

Power supply: Entergy Arkansas and Go ZERO
Entergy Arkansas supplies the mill and describes ASA as one of its largest customers. In February 2024 ASA became one of the first subscribers to Go ZERO, an Entergy Arkansas tariff that assigns clean-energy attributes from the utility's nuclear and renewable resources to a customer's consumption with hourly matching. Sumitomo said the agreement makes 100% of ASA's electricity carbon-free and gives the electric furnace mill zero Scope 2 emissions. The arrangement changes the attributes attached to the load rather than the physical supply. Neither company has published the mill's demand in MW.
Emissions intensity targets
ASA's Global Steel Climate Council certification reports an emissions intensity of 0.70 t CO2e per tonne of steel for 2023, with a 2030 target of 0.60 and a 2050 target of 0.12. Purchased electricity counts toward that intensity, so the Go ZERO subscription bears directly on it.
