BENTELER Steel/Tube Shreveport

Large load · 1 BENTELER DR, Shreveport, LA

BENTELER Steel/Tube's plant at the Port of Caddo-Bossier in Shreveport, Louisiana, is a hot-rolling seamless tube mill that opened in 2015. It makes oil country tubular goods, drill pipe, line pipe, structural pipe and casing. The original $975 million plan included a second phase with an electric arc furnace melt shop by 2020, and the company said it would buy billets until that furnace ran. No melt shop has been reported built, and EPA greenhouse gas reporting for the site covers only fuel combustion, not EAF steelmaking. Benteler called off a planned sale of the plant to Tenaris in 2023 and in 2024 began a $21 million threading expansion. No source gives the plant's MW demand or its utility arrangements.

Overview

When ground was broken in 2013, phase one was a hot-rolling seamless tube facility due in 2015, sized for up to 320,000 tons of tube a year. Phase two was a steel mill with an electric arc furnace in 2020, which would have made the site a much larger electric load. Benteler said it would buy billets on the local market until the furnace was running and then buy scrap for the EAF globally.

Profile

Sale called off
Benteler announced in summer 2022 that it would sell the Shreveport plant to Tenaris. In February 2023 it ended the deal after the agreed long-stop date passed. It said the ramped-up plant was one of the most modern and efficient tube plants in North America and that the oil and gas market outlook was much better than expected.
Threading expansion
In April 2024 Benteler announced a $21 million threading facility for its hot-rolled seamless tubes, adding 49 jobs to the 347 it already had in Louisiana. It is being built in two phases: a first threading line with a larger finished-goods yard and better rail loading, then a second thread line expected online by the end of 2026. Benteler is partnering with GB Connections and Hunting on premium connections.
