Large load · 53 Bell Ave, Upton, NY
The Electron-Ion Collider is a planned 2.4-mile-circumference accelerator collider complex at Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, New York. The project is preparing for the start of site construction in early 2027. Brookhaven's electrical demand is covered by NYPA supply, and design documents put the collider's projected total peak demand at 70 MVA.

Overview
The EIC will be a 2.4-mile-circumference accelerator collider complex for exploring the building blocks of visible matter. With approximately $400 million already invested, the project is preparing for the start of site construction in early 2027.
Profile
- Electricity and grid
- Electrical power requirements for the project are currently anticipated at net 60 MVA, with mechanical cooling requirements of 51 MW. Designers state the campus distribution and dedicated unit substations are designed to accommodate a projected total peak demand of 70 megavolt-amperes (MVA). NYPA has served the laboratory's load since 1982 and provides full requirements power, including 15 MW of low-cost power from upstate hydroelectric facilities. NYPA's contract allows it to meet the laboratory's electricity demand of up to 77 MW. BNL used 296 million kilowatt hours of electricity in 2024.
- Ownership
- Brookhaven National Laboratory is a research and development facility owned by the U.S. Department of Energy. Brookhaven Science Associates has operated the laboratory for the DOE since March 1998.
