The facility is a steel coil processing plant. Operations include carbon and stainless-steel pickling, annealing, cold rolling, and galvanizing. Rockport Works has an 80 inch wide galvanizing line which is the widest in the United States.
Profile
- Electricity and grid
- The facility straddles the service territories of CenterPoint Energy Indiana South and Southern Indiana Rural Electric Cooperative. Under a power service contract with the Joint Operating Group, Cleveland-Cliffs selects an outside electricity provider and negotiates the cost of electricity at wholesale rates. Power is transmitted through I&M transmission lines, managed by PJM, to facilities owned by the JOG, and then on to the Rockport plant.
- Flexibility
- Because the Rockport Plant's load is interruptible, Cleveland-Cliffs has benefited from more pricing options. The Commission approved participation in PJM's load response program through June 2027, with the next extension request due no later than December 31, 2026.
