Flint Hills Resources Corpus Christi West Plant refinery
Large load · 2825 SUNTIDE ROAD, Corpus Christi, TX
The Corpus Christi West Plant is a Flint Hills Resources refinery in Corpus Christi, Texas that produces jet fuel, ultra-low sulfur diesel, gasoline and chemical building blocks. Koch affiliates have owned and operated it since 1981, and Flint Hills Resources is a wholly owned subsidiary of Koch. The refinery runs an onsite combined heat and power system that supplies about 30 megawatts of electricity, plus a 27-megawatt solar installation.
Overview
The West refinery produces jet fuel, ultra-low sulfur diesel, gasoline and chemical building blocks, and the company says both of its Corpus Christi refineries operate continuously. An EPA-archived report describes the West Refinery as having a capacity of about 230,000 barrels per day of crude oil. On April 23, 2026 the refinery earned EPA's ENERGY STAR certification, ranking in the top 25 percent for energy efficiency; the improvements included converting steam-driven equipment to electric motors and consolidating processing units. On January 27, 2026 the Corpus Christi City Council approved a reclaimed-water supply agreement for the refinery, with initial processing of up to 1 million gallons per day and possible expansion to 2 million in a second phase.
Profile
- Electricity and grid
- The refinery's combined heat and power system supplies about 30 megawatts of electricity to refinery operations. A $53 million solar installation of 56,728 panels on 100 acres adjacent to the refinery is fully operational at 27 megawatts, and under optimal conditions is expected to meet about 28% of the refinery's power needs. At peak capacity, the combined heat and power system and solar together could satisfy up to 60% of the West refinery's power needs. A contractor designed a new 15kV/5kV/480V substation building for the West Crude Substation project, with a construction value of $28 million.
- Ownership and permits
- Koch Industries purchased the West Refinery from Sun Oil Company in 1981, and Koch affiliates have owned and operated the plant since. Flint Hills Resources is an independent refining company and a wholly owned subsidiary of Koch. The refinery operates under TCEQ federal operating permit O1272.
