GlobalFoundries Fab 8

Large load · 400 STONE BREAK RD EXT, Malta, NY

GlobalFoundries Fab 8 in Malta, Saratoga County, New York has made chips since 2009 and produces about 400,000 wafers a year. Its grid supply is anchored by the New York Power Authority: 15 MW of ReCharge NY power described as already supplied in February 2024, and a 15 MW ReCharge NY allocation plus a 90 MW block of High Load Factor power approved by the NYPA board in March 2024 for the $11.6 billion expansion. A second round of growth was announced in October 2026, when GlobalFoundries was selected to operate two more fabs on the Malta campus.

In February 2024 New York announced that NYPA already supplied GlobalFoundries with 15 MW of low-cost ReCharge NY power. On March 26, 2024 the NYPA board approved a 15 MW ReCharge NY allocation to GlobalFoundries to expand Fab 8 and build a new 358,000-square-foot fab on the Malta campus, and approved an additional 90 MW of High Load Factor power that NYPA will procure on the energy market. The expansion package also included $30 million in planned funding for state infrastructure upgrades and energy incentives provided by NYPA.

Profile

Substation and grid delivery
The Fab 8 complex is fed by a dedicated substation. Crompton Greaves (CG) designed and installed the original transmission lines and substation during construction in 2009-10 and later added a substation expansion with two 45/75 MVA power transformers for the Fab 8 complex, completed in 2014. In February 2024 the New York ISO flagged a Times Union report that questions remained about the ability of the state's electrical grid to meet the needs of another high-demand project alongside the Fab 8 expansion.
Expansion
GlobalFoundries announced an $11.6 billion expansion of its Malta site in February 2024, covering the existing Fab 8 and a new fab, and said Fab 8 produces 400,000 wafers each year. On October 14, 2026 the company said it had been selected as technology provider and operator for two new fabs at the Malta site under a U.S.-Japan initiative providing up to $21 billion in funding.
