Gränges Americas Huntingdon Plant
Large load · 400 Bill Brooks Dr., Huntingdon, TN
Gränges Americas' Huntingdon, Tennessee plant rolls and casts aluminium, including heat exchanger material for automotive and construction. A 2022 expansion added a recycling and casting centre using induction melting furnaces and all-electric annealing ovens, powered by renewable electricity through Carroll County Electric and the TVA Green Invest Program.
Overview
Huntingdon's main products are heat exchanger material for automotive and construction, and non heat exchanger material for containers, transformer windings, automotive heat shields and other uses. A 2017 announcement said Gränges would invest USD 110 million to expand its aluminium rolling operation in Huntingdon, Tennessee. When completed, the rolling capacity in Huntingdon was to increase from about 160 ktonnes to nearly 200 ktonnes per year. In 2021 Gränges announced a USD 33 million casting expansion that would add about 25 ktonnes per year of casting capacity.
Profile
- Electricity and grid
- The new recycling and casting centre uses induction melting furnaces in combination with all-electric annealing ovens. Renewable electricity will power all equipment and downstream production processes, in partnership with Carroll County Electric and the TVA Green Invest Program. A contractor reports modifications adding a total of 13.6 megawatts of new power for future process equipment in a 105,000 square foot addition to the Granges Aluminum Plant in Huntingdon. A local account of the 1994 ice storm says Granges, which was called Norandal at the time, had their power fed directly from TVA. Tennessee is not part of an RTO or ISO.
- Recent changes
- Gränges announced a USD 52 million investment in 2022 to expand its recycling and casting operations in Huntingdon. In late 2024, Gränges Americas commissioned the first all-electric casting line in the US. The new recycling and casting line, announced in 2021, was completed on time and on budget and is fully operational. A 2024 report says the company will purchase green electricity certificates for solar power, securing renewable electricity for the electric furnace.
