Hyundai-POSCO Louisiana Steel
Large load · 8579 HWY 405, Donaldsonville, LA
Hyundai-POSCO Louisiana Steel is a $5.8 billion electric arc furnace steel mill being built on about 1,800 acres at the RiverPlex MegaPark in Donaldsonville, on the west bank of the Mississippi in Ascension Parish. It is planned to make 2.7 million tonnes a year of automotive sheet for Hyundai and Kia plants in the US. Entergy signed an electric service agreement for the mill in April 2026, and Entergy Louisiana is building new high-voltage transmission on the West Bank to serve loads like it. No megawatt figure for the mill has been published. The ceremonial groundbreaking was on September 4, 2026, and commercial production is targeted for early 2029.
Overview
Entergy signed an agreement on April 30, 2026 to provide electric service to the mill. When the project was announced, Entergy Louisiana said it was planning major transmission projects on the West Bank and in south central Louisiana, including new high-voltage lines, to add load-serving capacity for projects like this one. In 2025 the Louisiana Public Service Commission approved a $498 million upgrade for two unnamed industrial users at RiverPlex, including a new Commodore substation in Iberville Parish and about 60 miles of new line between Waterford and Commodore; a commissioner cited the Hyundai project when discussing it. Entergy's filing for its West Bank 230 kV project describes roughly 5,000 MW of forecast load additions in the region, without naming customers.
Profile
- The mill
- The plant is an EAF-based integrated mill covering the full process from raw steelmaking materials to finished hot-rolled, cold-rolled and coated sheet, with 2.7 million tonnes a year of capacity. Hyundai Steel says it will emit about 70% less carbon than blast furnace production. Hyundai Steel holds 50%, POSCO 20%, and Hyundai Motor and Kia 15% each.
- Schedule and permitting
- The project was announced in March 2025. The ceremonial groundbreaking took place on September 4, 2026, and commercial production is expected in early 2029. Site preparation has started, but at the groundbreaking the company had not yet received the air permit it needs before main construction can begin. Some residents and advocacy groups oppose the project.
