Linde Niagara Falls Hydrogen Plant

Large load · 4501 ROYAL AVENUE, Niagara Falls, NY

Linde's hydrogen plant at 4501 Royal Avenue in Niagara Falls, New York, produces hydrogen for industrial customers and is adding a 35 MW proton exchange membrane electrolyzer powered by Niagara River hydropower. In July 2022 the New York Power Authority board awarded Linde a 22 MW hydropower allocation for the $75 million expansion. The electrolyzer system, supplied by Accelera, was delivered in 2025. Public sources do not confirm when it entered commercial operation.

Empire State Development said in September 2022 that Linde was expanding its Niagara Falls electrolyzer project to a 35 MW plant, replacing an earlier $17 million proposal. The plant was to be powered by renewable energy sourced from the Robert Moses Niagara Power Station, with hydroelectric power from the Niagara River driving the system. The green hydrogen is supplied to customers through the existing infrastructure at the Linde Niagara Falls site.

Profile

The 22 MW NYPA allocation
The New York Power Authority board approved low-cost Niagara Power Project hydropower allocations for three companies in July 2022. Linde, which has a clean hydrogen production facility in Niagara Falls, was awarded 22 MW for a $75 million expansion project to advance its production of green hydrogen. The award supported the state's goal of becoming a regional clean energy hydrogen hub.
Equipment delivery in 2025
In September 2025 Accelera, the zero-emissions business of Cummins, delivered the 35 MW PEM electrolyzer system for Linde's Niagara Falls plant. Trade coverage described it as the largest operational system of its kind in the US and said it would run entirely on renewable hydroelectric energy from the region. The system was manufactured at Accelera's Minnesota facility. No source reviewed gives a commercial start date.
