Linde Whiting Hydrogen
Large load · 2551 DICKEY ROAD, East Chicago, IN
Linde's Dickey Road hydrogen complex at East Chicago, Indiana, adjacent to the BP Whiting refinery, produces hydrogen and liquid carbon dioxide from natural-gas steam methane reformers that Praxair built and Linde now operates. Its process feed is natural gas supplied by NIPSCO, and it sits next to the BP Whiting refinery, which draws its hydrogen from these reformers and has its own hydrogen plans.
Overview
Praxair began supplying BP's Whiting refinery complex with hydrogen from two new steam methane reformers in November 2010, with a combined capacity of 200 million standard cubic feet per day. BP uses the hydrogen to make ultra-low-sulfur gasoline and diesel. Praxair operated 40 hydrogen production facilities worldwide at the time, and its engineering group designed, procured and built the Whiting plant.
Profile
- Process and feed, per the 2021 EPA inspection
- EPA Region 5 inspected the facility on April 13, 2021. Its report describes steam methane reformers that react natural gas and steam over a nickel catalyst into hydrogen, with a CO2 purification system producing liquid CO2. SMR-4, the largest reformer, was then the only one in operation; its natural gas is supplied by NIPSCO and its raw water comes from the adjacent BP refinery. The report notes the facility's name changed from Praxair to Linde after the merger and that it operates under operation permit T089-38226-00435.
- BP hydrogen hub plans at Whiting
- BP has said it wants to create its own hydrogen hub at the Whiting refinery and expected an investment decision on those projects within two to three years of March 2023, aiming to produce clean hydrogen before the end of the decade. Any new BP hydrogen supply would sit alongside the existing Linde reformers serving the refinery.
