Overview
North Star BlueScope Steel is a steelmaking mini-mill located in Delta, Ohio, operating three electric arc furnaces. Producing approximately three million tonnes of steel per annum, it represents nearly four per cent of U.S. domestic hot-rolled coil steel production.
Profile
- Electricity and grid
- The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio authorized a rate agreement between North Star BlueScope and Toledo Edison on May 1, 2024 to facilitate planned expansions. North Star BlueScope will add 112 megawatts of electric load to its existing interruptible commitment, contingent on a $100-150 million planned expansion. A PJM large-load presentation records intentions to grow to 300 MVA peak demand, and FirstEnergy installed two capacitor banks at the substation that delivers electricity to the mill.
- Demand response
- North Star participates in the Five Coincident Peak (5CP) program to ease the mill's load impact on the northwestern Ohio grid during heavy demand. GridBeyond's initial agreement provides for management of 90MW with aspirations to expand to 200MW.
