Nucor Steel Nebraska
Large load · 2911 E NUCOR RD, Norfolk, NE
Nucor Steel Nebraska is a scrap-based electric arc furnace steel mill in Norfolk, Stanton County, Nebraska, owned by Nucor Corporation and operating since 1973. It melts scrap in a DC furnace fed from Nebraska Public Power District's Hoskins 345-kilovolt substation next door, and it makes bar and coil products including engineered bar for automotive customers. The mill produces almost a million tons of steel a year.
Overview
NPPD's Hoskins 345-kilovolt substation sits directly east of the mill and also serves Norfolk and the surrounding area. A static var compensator installed there in 1997 removes the harmonics created when Nucor melts scrap, so that the furnace does not make lights flicker for other NPPD customers. Nucor says it cannot operate its DC furnace without the equipment.
Profile
- Replacement of the static var compensator
- By 2007 the original compensator was ten years old and NPPD could not stock spare parts with acceptable lead times, so the two companies worked together on a new design. Nucor assumed all costs for the redesigned unit, which NPPD owns and operates, and Nucor engineers tested it at the manufacturer's plant in Switzerland. The project was reported in December 2014.
- Melt shop expansion
- In February 2014 Nucor announced a $70 million investment in the Norfolk melt shop to raise productivity by more than 20 percent, with completion expected by the first quarter of 2015. The expansion followed Tejas Tubular Products' decision to build a pipe plant in the area; Nucor supplies about 150,000 tons of steel to Tejas.
