Nucor Steel West Virginia

Large load · 29618 HUNTINGTON ROAD, Apple Grove, WV

Nucor's new sheet mill at Apple Grove in Mason County, West Virginia, is an electric arc furnace plant sized for up to 3 million tons of sheet steel a year on about 1,700 acres along the Ohio River. Appalachian Power holds a 10-year special contract to serve it with up to 450,000 kW, which will make the mill the utility's largest customer. Nucor struck the first arc in August 2026 and plans to finish commissioning by the end of the year, with 2027 the first year of operations.

Overview

Contracted demand
450 MW
under construction

The West Virginia Public Service Commission approved a 10-year special electric rate contract between Nucor Steel West Virginia and Appalachian Power in January 2024, on a joint petition filed on November 3, 2023. Appalachian Power will supply up to 450,000 kW (450 MW) and build about $149.5 million of transmission to the site. The order did not publish the rates, and the commission said the contract played a pivotal role in Nucor choosing Appalachian Power's territory.

Profile

New 345 kV substation
AEP is building a new substation near the mill to provide 345 kV service, on land across Route 2 that Nucor bought for support operations. The substation is there to meet the arc furnaces' demand. Nucor will be Appalachian Power's biggest customer.
Commissioning the melt shop
At the SMU Steel Summit in August 2026, Nucor's executive vice president of sheet products said the company had struck an arc in the new electric arc furnace and the pickle line was producing. Commissioning of the hot and cold mills follows, with the whole mill due to be commissioned by the end of 2026.
