In September 2026 REC Silicon was asking the city to hold off on road improvements near its currently idled manufacturing facility, saying the expense could interfere with efforts to restart operations. REC's end products all require ultrapure silane, which is sold as is, as silicon granules from fluid bed reactors or as rods from Siemens reactors.
Profile
- Electricity and grid
- Grant County PUD #2 provides the electrical power services for the SGS manufacturing facility, and a 56-megawatt electrical substation with associated switches and transmission lines was built for the expansion. About 5.5 average megawatts of the 2025 Grant PUD load reduction was the shutdown of REC Silicon in Moses Lake, and the PUD said REC's reduction in power demand lowers its daily average total power obligation to customers by less than 3%. REC and Grant County PUD signed a 20-year power sales agreement in 2011, and the company pays the rates listed in a public rate schedule. The PUD said REC may keep its energy needs on reserve by paying the minimum monthly charge, as a temporary measure not intended for long-term curtailment. Grant County PUD is registered as a Balancing Authority.
