Texas Instruments South Portland Fab
Large load · 5 FODEN ROAD, South Portland, ME
The Texas Instruments South Portland plant is a microchip fabrication site in South Portland, Maine, operated by Texas Instruments since its 2011 acquisition of National Semiconductor. It opened in 1997 and employed about 550 people when the acquisition was announced. Its operating role has grown since then. Texas Instruments moved production to the site in 2016 from its Scottish plant and was hiring for the fab in 2017.
Overview
Texas Instruments completed its purchase of National Semiconductor in 2011, a deal the Associated Press reported as valued at $6.5 billion. At announcement the companies said Texas Instruments would continue to operate National's manufacturing plants in South Portland, Scotland and Malaysia. The Sun Journal ran the same report under the headline that the South Portland plant would stay open after the acquisition, which confirms the site as one of the company's continuing US-operated fabs. The South Portland plant itself opened in 1997 and at the time employed about 550 people.
Profile
- Workforce and production
- In January 2016 Texas Instruments announced that its South Portland production plant would take on more work after it said it would close a plant in Scotland. Mainebiz reported that the shift of production from Scotland to South Portland, along with work moving to Japan and Germany, was due to the higher cost of production in Scotland, according to the company. In August 2017 the company was hiring up to 20 contract workers for its South Portland microchip fabrication plant, a sign of added production at the site.
- Site role
- The South Portland site is one of the semiconductor fabs that Texas Instruments kept after acquiring National Semiconductor, and it employed about 550 people when the acquisition was announced. The fab is a microchip fabrication plant, and reporting on its 2016 and 2017 changes ties its output growth to hiring and production transfers from Scotland. The Scottish-to-Maine production shift was a cost decision, with work also moving to Japan and Germany.
