Overview

Because wind is concentrated in specific parts of the state, the regional split shows where the generation is physically coming from and how it shifts with weather. Comparing the forecast vintages against the realized values reveals how wind expectations firmed up as the operating hour approached, which informs net-load estimates, congestion and ramping risk, and price formation. Sourced from ERCOT report NP4-742-CD (Wind Power Production).

Query contract

Choose one geography and one source_time vintage per event_time before comparing forecast and actual wind output. Use geography='system_wide' for an ERCOT-wide value.

Analysis rules

Do not sum regional rows together with geography='system_wide', and do not sum forecast vintages.

Interpretation

actual_mw and wind forecast fields measure generation output, not gross electricity demand. A wind forecast miss may change net load and dispatch needs, but it does not establish the cause or magnitude of an ERCOT gross-load forecast error.

ERCOT Generation Mix by FuelERCOT · 5-minute (live) and 15-minute (settled)	What is physically generating in ERCOT, in megawatts by fuel, one row per interval. 691,109 intervals, 2007-01 to now. Columns: coal_mw, gas_mw, nuclear_mw, hydro_mw, wind_mw, solar_mw, storage_mw, other_mw. Wide rather than long: a whole interval's mix is one row, so shares are computed across columns in that row and the timestamp does not repeat once per fuel. "Which fuel is largest" is greatest() across the columns, or simply reading the row.
Fuel Mix (5-minute)ERCOT · 5-minute	Realized generation in megawatts across ERCOT's eight headline fuel categories (such as gas, wind, solar, nuclear, coal, and hydro), reported at five-minute intervals for the Texas grid. This is the live operational view of where power is actually coming from at any moment, the faster companion to the settlement-grade Fuel Mix Report. It lets operators, traders, and researchers watch the resource mix shift in near real time, track renewable ramps and gas response intraday, and see how generation composition moves with load and prices. The official upstream source is ERCOT report NP6-788-CD (Fuel Mix Report). The SQL agent queries this through the unified `ercot_fuel_mix` view (quality='live') rather than this table directly.
Fuel Mix (Unified)ERCOT · 5-minute (live only, pending settled backfill)	Realized ERCOT generation in megawatts by fuel type (coal, hydro, nuclear, storage, solar, wind, gas, other), one row per (event_time, fuel_type, quality). Long-format unification of the live 5-minute feed and the settlement-grade Fuel Mix Report — but quality='settled' is TEMPORARILY DISABLED: ercot.fuel_mix_report's gen_mw was found to be ~4x too low (ERCOT publishes MWh delivered per 15-min interval, not average MW, and the writer didn't convert). The write-path bug is fixed, but existing report rows are still wrong pending a full historical backfill, so this view currently emits quality='live' only (the 5-minute feed, which reads a separate MW-native source and is correct). The settled branch will return once the backfill is verified. Always filter by event_time; this is a view, and an unbounded scan is expensive. This is the table the SQL agent actually queries; ercot_fuel_mix_report and ercot_fuel_mix_5min remain in the public catalog as the underlying raw sources.
Fuel Mix ReportERCOT · 15-minute (settlement)	ERCOT's Fuel Mix Report (IntGenByFuel) gives actual electricity generation across the Texas grid broken out by fuel type, for every 15-minute settlement interval. Each interval lists output for categories such as gas, coal, nuclear, wind, solar, hydro, and storage, with values first published as initial readings and later restated as settlement-quality finals. It shows what physically ran on the system and in what proportion, letting operators, traders, and researchers track the real-time generation mix, gauge renewable penetration against load, and study how the fuel stack shifts hour to hour and season to season. The SQL agent queries this through the unified `ercot_fuel_mix` view (quality='settled') rather than this table directly.
