On or about May 1998, AES Huntington Beach acquired the Huntington Beach electricity-generation facility from Southern California Edison. The three-station AES purchase price was $781 million.
The CEC certified the Huntington Beach Generating Station retool project. AES retooled Units 3 and 4 with new natural-gas burners, burner-management systems, draft fans, and selective catalytic reduction equipment; these units had been out of service since 1995.
The CEC records August 7, 2003 as the commercial-operation date for the certified natural-gas-fired retool project.
