Kendall Square Station
Kendall Square Station is a natural-gas combined-cycle and oil-fired cogeneration plant in Cambridge, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, with three operating generating units totaling 234.7 MW of nameplate capacity. The facility is registered with EIA under Kendall Green Energy, LLC and is owned by Vicinity Energy, a district-energy company that has been controlled by Antin Infrastructure Partners since Antin's 2020 acquisition of Vicinity's predecessor, Veolia Energy North America. The original portion of the site dates to a coal-fired steam plant built in the late 1940s, with a combined-cycle gas unit added in 2002 and an oil-fired peaking unit also on site. Vicinity has been converting the facility's thermal output toward electrification, including a 42-megawatt electric boiler installed in 2024 and a heat pump project using Charles River water begun in 2025 to reduce reliance on the gas- and oil-fired steam boilers. No whole-plant retirement is scheduled, and all three units remain in operating status under current EIA data.
