St Clair
St. Clair Power Plant is a natural gas-fired combustion turbine facility in St. Clair County, Michigan, with 18.5 MW of nameplate capacity from a single generating unit that has been running since May 1968. The site is owned and operated by DTE Electric Company, a subsidiary of DTE Energy. For most of its history the site was far larger: it was a major coal- and oil-fired complex that at its peak supplied nearly 2,000 MW and was, after Unit 7's 1969 completion, briefly the world's largest power plant. DTE retired the plant's coal-fired boilers in December 2022 alongside the utility's Trenton Channel plant, part of a broader push toward carbon-free generation that DTE says has left roughly a third of its electricity coming from carbon-free sources. What remains in service today at the St. Clair site is the small 1968-vintage gas turbine, which continues to run as a peaking unit even though the coal boilers that once dominated the plant are gone. The unit sells into MISO and is settled at DTE-area price nodes near the St. Clair River, such as DECO.BLR1.DEMO.
