Overview

Plant-level monthly net generation and fuel consumption from EIA Form 923, the Power Plant Operations Report. Each record captures how much electricity a single utility-scale facility actually produced in a given month, broken out by energy source (fuel type) and prime mover, alongside the fuel it burned to do so — net and gross generation in MWh, physical fuel consumption, the consumption attributable to electricity generation, the equivalent heat input in MMBtu, and the average heat content of the fuel. Unlike nameplate inventories, this is realized output, so it is the standard reference for what plants really generated over time and how efficiently they ran. The plant code is the ORISPL/EIA plant id, the same join key used by the EIA-860 generator inventory, so realized monthly generation here joins directly to a plant's capacity, technology, location, and ownership in eia860. History runs back to 2001. EIA restates recent months as late survey data arrives, so the table is bitemporal: bronze is append-only and silver keeps the latest vintage per plant-month-fuel.

Henry Hub Natural Gas Spot PriceThe daily Henry Hub natural gas spot price in $/MMBtu, published by the U.S. Energy Information Administration as series RNGWHHD. Henry Hub is the national benchmark that other US gas is quoted against, and it is the reference point for gas-fired generation cost in every market, so it is the denominator for basis work and the anchor for any implied-heat-rate or spark-spread calculation. The series runs from 1997-01-07 to the present on trading days only — there are no weekend or holiday rows, and a missing weekday is a non-trading day rather than a gap. It publishes on a short delay, typically two to ten days behind the trade date, so it answers questions about yesterday and last month rather than about right now; pair it with a live market feed for same-day work. This is a national reference series with a single hub, so it carries no market or locational dimension and cannot on its own establish a regional gas price — a delivered regional cost needs a regional series. The basis_usd_mmbtu column is structurally zero for every row and carries no information; it is not a basis series and must not be read as one. A national reference with no market dimension, queryable from every active grid scope. When the asked-for date returns no rows, answer with the latest published print and its date — the lag is the fact to report, not a reason to stop. Annual final filings give the authoritative year-end picture, while the monthly EIA-860M updates track newly proposed, added, and retired units between annual releases, making it useful for tracking the fleet's evolving capacity mix and the buildout of new resources.Solar GeneratorsThis is the utility-scale solar slice of the EIA-860 generator inventory, listing every operating solar generating unit along with its plant, location, owner, nameplate and net capacity, and in-service dates. It adds solar-specific attributes such as panel tracking type (fixed, single-axis, or dual-axis) and tilt angle.
