The cooling pond is part of the Mazonia-Braidwood State Fish and Wildlife Area and is jointly managed by Constellation and IDNR under a long-term lease dating from 1991. The public has access to the cooling pond for fishing, waterfowl hunting, and fossil collecting.

2023

80 controlled liquid-effluent batch releases in 2023; tritium detected in river samples but below drinking-water standards

Illinois radiological monitoring report states that Braidwood liquid effluents were released in controlled batches under NRC-license and IEPA-NPDES limits. In 2023, 80 liquid-effluent batch releases occurred; detectable tritium was found in Kankakee River samples likely attributable to station releases; tritium levels remained below EPA and IEPA drinking-water standards.
